The current economic status the United States is facing is making a lot of people cut corners when it comes to basic necessities around the house. While a lot of people have lost their jobs, it does not mean they can just go without food and a place to stay.
The restaurant industry has somewhat taken a backseat when it comes to people finding something to eat. It is so much cheaper to cook meals at home. A great way to maximize your savings is to create a meal plan to go by every week. Taking weekly trips to the grocery store will help keep your food fresh and the fridge stocked. If it is done this way, you have everything already planned and purchased in advance, which leads to less impulse eating out and a healthier lifestyle!
Shopping discount stores can be an excellent way to save money. Always try to bargain shop. If there is something your family needs, try to compare prices at 2-3 stores to see who has the best deal. If you have a membership to a wholesale store (Costco, BJ’s, Sam’s Club), try to buy toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies there. I personally love BJ’s because they accept store and manufacturer’s coupons. TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshall’s are great retail stores to shop for clothing and other home items.
Any electronics that are not in use in your home, unplug them. I am guilty of this one! I have been trying to make it a priority to unplug lamps, cell phone chargers, and television’s when they are not in use, but I’m pretty forgetful.
As soon as you leave a room and are not expecting to go right back in, turn the TV and all of the lights off. It is pretty easy for this to become a habit. Open blinds and curtains during the day to let natural sunlight in.
Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full. This saves both water and electricity. If you only have a few clothes that just have got to be washed, be sure to change the water level to low, and use less detergent than you would for a full load. Use cold water in the washing machine, that way you are not using energy to heat the water. How necessary is it to wash your everyday clothes in hot water? Not too important.
Save money by buying off brand cleaning products. Anything from kitchen to bathroom cleaners, there is always a generic brand that is somewhat cheaper than the popular brands. Even if it is just a small difference, every little bit adds up to save you more money .
In order to save money at home, just look around and see what you could be doing differently. There are so many different things to do that can help save big bucks when it comes time to pay the bills!
